Walt Bayliss Connects IBS and WordPress

Walt Bayliss always seems to have something up his sleeve.  And I mean that in a good way!  Although we’ve never met or even spoken, he seems to be someone to keep an eye on and someone with whom to connect.

Not his first rodeo, but one that I certainly have used, is Instant Blog Subscribers.  There has been some comment in various places (by "real" bloggers) that this platform has people who know nothing about blogging suddenly thinking they are bloggers.  Looking at some of the blogs that have been created that are nothing but advertising and some of the SPAMmy comments on my own posts here that may have some validity.  But since I’m a blogging novice, having only started back in early spring, I will not throw stones.

So, what I wanted to write about today is the new addition to the IBS platform that gives us the ability to update our WordPress blogs when we post here on Instant Blog Subscribers.  I haven’t used it yet and this post is mostly a test run.

I have two WordPress blogs.  Internet Marketing Tips & Tools and Ultimate List Building Tips Blog.  I am guessing that this procedure will simply copy this post into those blogs.  If that is the case, how does this affect Google’s ranking and rules regarding duplicate content.  I have no idea because I truly don’t understand that issue.  So, I welcome comments that can explain this issue.

This Will Make You Smile

Well, this is a little out of the norm for what I generally share on my blog. But it was so cool that I couldn’t resist.

Just to give you a little background information on how I got to this… There was a new “opportunity” just launched by Walt Bayliss, an Internet marketer of some renown. The program is called Instant Blog Subscribers . The whole premise is to be able to connect with others through a blogging system, even if you’re a complete blogging newbie. I joined and have been posting a few things there.

I made contact with a gentleman in Thailand, who is originally from West Texas. YAY! He actually wrote some good posts, as opposed to so many people who are simply throwing sales pages up on the site. So, I visited his website and this video was on there. I was so taken by the message on the video that I wanted to share it with you too.

It’s a bit long, a little over 16 minutes. But very entertaining and enlightening. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Mostly I hope you take the message from it that I took.

How To Add Images To Your Blog Excerpts

I was recently asked how to add images to your blog so I thought maybe a post with the instructions for doing so might be in order. So, here goes…

First of all, you want to have your front page of your posts to show excerpts, rather than the full posts. The reason for doing that is people will come to your blog and if the subject at hand isn’t something they are interested in, they will probably leave. They’re not likely to scroll down through massive quantities of text to find something of interest. Also, seeing a page with a large amount of text on it is not very appealing, even if it is a subject that might be of interest to the reader.

So, I was instructed to do it differently, by just showing excerpts and by adding images to the page. Images are considered “eye candy” and people will interact more. I have two blogs that I do this on, and as far as I can tell, you do it differently depending on the theme you are using. At least the first part is done differently; that’s the part where you tell your theme that you want to show excerpts of your posts rather than full posts.

Here are a few instructions:

I use the Mystique theme for this blog.

First I went to Appearance, then clicked on Mystique settings.

In that section, I went to Content and chose the drop down menu for Post Previews & chose Excerpts.

Now, on my UltimateListBuildingTips blog I use the Decker theme, and on that one I had to go to Appearance, then choose Editor and had to adjust the code in Main Index Template (index.php) Rather than giving the instructions for that here, I would just tell you to determine how your particular theme works and adjust it accordingly.

Now, go to your posts and you’ll see an area underneath where you write your post called Excerpt. In that area, add this code:

(Please note that in order for the code above to actually show up in this post, I had to goof around some with the code by putting a space after the opening tag < and before the closing tag >.)

The image should be no larger than about 125×125, the code above decreases the height to 100 pixels. That reminds me. I found a great free tool for resizing images. Go to http://picnik.com, upload your image, resize it (additional editing available), and save it. Works great! Very easy to use.

After you put that code in with your image url, put a few lines of text in directly after that closing tag > then add this code to the end: < br style="clear:both;"/ >
(I also had to adjust this code by adding spaces after the opening and before the closing tags.)

And, here’s how it would look when finished:

(Again, I added spaces after the opening tag and before the closing tag so you could actually see the code “in action”. Be sure to take the spaces out when actually doing this so that it works properly)

Below is an example of how an excerpt with an image would appear, using the code above with the spaces taken out.

I always manually add the text that I want included in the excerpt. I’m pretty sure there is a way to have it select an excerpt automatically. But this way, I know that it has the amount of material that I want included.

Its really pretty simple to do. The biggest challenge is finding an image that pertains to your post. Just a quick recommendation for some free clip art. I found this site while looking for clip art that didn’t require a subscription or didn’t have copyrighted material. It’s called HassleFreeClipArt and it really is! Random Musings from a Sleep-Deprived Internet Marketer

It has been a little while since I posted anything here. Not because I have nothing to say, it’s just that there seem to be so many thoughts and ideas running through my head that I don’t know where to begin. I kept waiting for a clear thought process, a clear focus, for this post to show up before I posted. Finally, I realized that if I didn’t start writing, I might never write again! That’s when I decided that I’d better just do it, and hope the action of writing will create the results of what I want to say. How’s that working out? We shall see…

Let’s deal with the “sleep-deprived” issue first. Why am I sleep-deprived? That’s one I haven’t fully grasped an answer for just yet. When I wake up in the morning, whether it’s 4 a.m. or 7 a.m., I MUST get up. My brain and my body just won’t let me luxuriate in the peaceful morning “sleeping late” privilege. At night, sometimes I might take a rest for a couple of hours in the mid-evening, 8ish or so, but after I’ve slept, I get a second wind and I’ll come in here and work more. Basically, I sleep around 4-6 hours a night. Tops.

Now, that random thought brings me to one that I heard Thursday night. Mike Paetzold was talking about how people have different sleep patterns and needs. He is a morning person. He knows that he is most creative early morning. People who work with him in this industry do not bother him during that time frame, don’t talk to him, they know to leave him alone… he’s busy. Sunny Suggs is a night-owl and is at her best during the late night. The beauty of this Internet Marketing business is that you can work whenever your mind and body work best. But what you need to do, Mike pointed out is be sure to do your most creative work during your most productive work period. Grunt work can be done when you are feeling dull or lethargic or just plain lazy. Grunt work would be things like posting ads, surfing, that type of ‘mindless’ activity where you don’t really have to be plugged in. So, take that time and make good use of it. Here’s a great piece by Brian Tracy called The Golden Hour.

Launches, pre-launches, soft launches, pre pre-launches. WOW! There seem to be more things coming at us every day on the Internet. It’s really hard to know what is good and what isn’t. Here are a few suggestions… if it is another program to jump into because it’s going to make you a bazillionaire overnight, stay away. You KNOW that ain’t real! If it’s a juice, pill, or potion that just been discovered by some guy doing charity work in the deep dark forests of the Amazon or on top of Mount Kilimanjaro, and it’s going to cure everything from pimples on your butt to arthritis to cancer, AND it’s going to make you a bazillionaire overnight, stay away. You KNOW that ain’t real either. Now that you have that firmly in your head, don’t be dissuaded or distracted by those things ever again. So, that leave us with this matrix and that cash gifting program and you never have to lift a finger or recruit a single person and the TEAM is going to do all the work for you and give you 5, 10, 15, 20, 100 paid signups just because you sign up. COME ON…. Stop with that gimme, gimme, gimme attitude. It’s time to stand on your own two feet and become a real Internet marketer who offers something of value.

I firmly believe that if you offer something of real value, you will be successful. Successful without all the hype, bullwhip, lies, schemes and scams that seem so prevalent. There is real value in traffic, tools and information. Of course, just like anything else, those things come in all forms, some worthless and some with incredible value. But at least if you’ve thrown away the notion that you need to look at every other thing on the Internet, you can sort through and pick out the best resources in traffic, tools and information.

I do want to warn you about one thing though. Be careful (watch for pickpockets). Let me explain what I mean. I’ve been on some great training lately but every time the trainer has a call, they’ve got their hand out. You’ve got to buy this software or you’ve got to take this advertising package, or sign-up for this. And what happens, people get caught up in the hype, even the peer-pressure of seeing others on the call jumping on board. There was even one instance where someone did an auction for some banner advertising. And in all the hype, I ended up paying $35 a month to have a banner put on their site. Someone else paid well over $100 for another banner advertising slot there. That’s not just crazy, that’s STUPID to pay that kind of money for that. And YES, me included. That’s what I’m telling you. Be Careful. It’s too easy to get caught up in the moment. So, just be aware and don’t let yourself be sold.

Now, there are a lot of incredibly AWESOME people out there too. I’d like to take a moment to express some heartfelt gratitude to some special people. I’d like to recognize my great new friend, Sunny Suggs, who answers my questions, boosts my spirits and quells my insecurities. Rick Katz, who keeps me laughing, was a great sounding board for my eBook, telling me what I needed to hear and making me listen to his voice of experience. Both Cenay Nailor and Mike Paetzold straightened me out on some blogging issues, and helped make this blog better. Eric Lafontaine and Carl Bailey, in addition to Sunny, helped me launch my site by putting out the message to their lists. And last but certainly not least, Arnold Lindstrom volunteered to create banners for my site.

And to my wonderful friends and colleagues, subscribers, and readers…. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I just wanted to give you a quick review about the site. ApSense is a great place to network, advertise, and build your list. I’ve been a member of ApSense for a while, unfortunately I have not used it to it’s fullest capacity. But it is my intention to rectify that going forward.

At ApSense.com, you are allowed to create a blog, show your favorite resources, and actually build an online presence. The cost of ApSense.com is free, or you can upgrade and take advantage of more features.

ApSense.com includes a desktop marketing system called iChannel. Some text ad exchanges include desktop advertising in their arsenal of services. By subscribing to their iChannel, you can receive ads delivered to your desktop rather than to your email inbox. It’s a great way to read ads, you earn credits just like you do when you go to the text ad exchange or to your email. I just started my own iChannel, ultimatelistbuilding

I am hoping that my blog posts will update there. I will probably have to learn a little more about doing that. But learning new things is something that I enjoy. Sometimes I find myself in a little trouble, as in when I was trying to change some information in the header of my other blog Ultimate List Building Tips. I couldn’t quite get a header to change correctly, so I had to ask for help. That’s okay, because now I learned how to fix it. Never be afraid to try something and if you need help, ask for it.

How To Update My Blog

Learning how to update my blog was NOT what I had in mind this morning. I SHOULD be in east Texas for a family reunion, or at least “on the road again” (to steal borrow a Willie Nelson lyric).

But, I recently found that WordPress.org had an updated version. 3.0 I think it is. So, I bravely decided to update it. I’d never backed up my files. So, I went to my hosting site, HostGator (a great Texas company based in Houston but opening a branch in Austin too). I backed up my files. Not only did I feel accomplished, but I felt, oh so much safer, knowing that I wouldn’t be in danger of losing all my hard work.

YEA!! The newest version of WordPress uploaded properly and it was a beautiful thing. Oops! One thing I’d changed on my original edition of Internet Marketing Tips & Tools was the headline color. I am using a WordPress theme called Mystique. And the headline was white with a red hover. Meaning if you hover your mouse over the words of the title, they turn red. I did not like the white title; it seemed out of place with the rest of the page. So, I decided to change it to the green that was used on the sidebar. Except, of course, I had no idea how to do it.

I may have mentioned this in a previous post, but I stayed up until approximately 4:00 one morning trying to make that headline title be green, not white. Finally, out of sheer exhaustion (and not just a little frustration), I gave in (not gave up) and went to bed. The next morning when I got up a couple of hours later, lo and behold… the white was now GREEN. Don’t ask, I haven’t a clue!

Well, after I updated to WordPress.org 3.0, I realized that my previously green headline had reverted back to white. Darn, I HATE when that happens! But, being the busy girl I am, I put fixing it on my “when I get ‘aroundtoit’. Which brings us to this point in my life…doing something that absolutely did not HAVE to be done right now…but I HAD to do it RIGHT NOW.

Guess what. I came in and set about the task of changing it and what do you think I found? You’ll never guess, so let’s get on with it. I found that the theme I’m using has an updated version now also. $&(*W&((^%%$#@$ You can just imagine what I was thinking.

So, I updated that. Went in, hunted down my css code (still don’t know exactly what that is, but I’ll fill you in when I do learn), found what needed to be changed. And changed it!! And it WORKED! Now, I’m a happy camper, or happy blogger as the case may be, and I can shower and get on the road to see my wonderful family.

P.S. I wanted to mention that I use a great little program called Instant Splash to make splash and capture pages for my marketing business. It’s a really cool program and I just love it. One of the things I love about it is the color chart. I use that to pick colors and to see what color a particular hexadecimal code is. Blog to Grow

Okay, maybe that is a bit of a silly title, but it fits what I wanted to share with you.

I use Skype a lot in business. It’s a great tool for instantly communicating with my team members, other networkers, and really anyone who has Skype, across the globe. So, I really love it. Skype is a free download. If you don’t have it yet, I recommend that you get it.

What happens is people will request to be part of your contacts. You have the option of accepting them, blocking them or even reporting them for abuse. Most people are on Skype and want to share contact information with you for good reasons but just like anywhere else, there can be those with whom you don’t care to associate. So I always make it a practice to view a person’s profile before just accepting willy-nilly anyone who requests contact. Well, Friday night, I had a contact request and when I checked it was from a lady in New York who wrote that she and I had something in common. I decided to accept her contact and right away she called me on video Skype! That was a bit of a shock, as I’ve never had anyone do that before!

I answered the Skype call, and had the most delightful visit with a lady from Russia who lives in Brooklyn. She thought maybe I was Russian because of my name. (Nestoroff is Bulgarian, in case you are interested; I ‘borrowed’ the name when I married many, many years ago and have used it ever since) Anyway, she had somehow run across my name and my blog. In the blog here, you probably read that I was introduced to MLM in the 1980’s with Herbalife. So that was our connection!

Margarita has a strong Russian accent. Living in a mostly Russian-speaking community in Brooklyn, she doesn’t have an opportunity to interact in English as much as she would like. We did have a great conversation though, and she’s looking for someone to help her with her online business. We made a good connection and have plans to work together. She watched my video on organizing her computer and found it very helpful. So, I’m really looking forward to guiding Margarita through some of the treacherous Internet waters, and maybe she’ll teach me some Russian!

This was just going to be a short post… ha ha! Anyway, my purpose in telling you about this is to make a point that you never know who you may run across, who might see something you write that triggers a response, who may need your help. So, my advice is get out there and make your presence known on the Internet!
